Event Details

Maebashi, located in Gunma Prefecture and once known for its bustling silk trade, is a prototypical Japanese regional city that has suffered a decline in population and local economy in modern times. However, in recent years, Maebashi has undergone a remarkable transformation, emerging as a vibrant hub for arts and culture, led by a united effort from local businesses, ambitious young talent, and investors.

Yuka Takahashi is one of the young talents leading the charge as a curator at Arts Maebashi, the city's public art museum. A former advertising professional, Takahashi transitioned to the art world after completing her MFA in Curating Contemporary Design at Kingston University in 2022 and has quickly established herself as a rising star in the field. Takahashi has successfully curated "Liquidscape: Southeast Asia Today," an ambitious exhibition that invites viewers to immerse themselves in the rapidly evolving cultural and social landscapes of Southeast Asia.

Join us for another edition of the Art for Breakfast series at Asia Society Japan, as Takahashi shares her experiences working with international artists and navigating the complexities of presenting diverse regional perspectives in a cohesive narrative. She will also discuss her personal journey, as well as the challenges and visions of a curator working outside the major cultural hub of Tokyo.

"Liquidscape: Southeast Asia Today" is on display at Arts Maebashi until December 25.

This is a great opportunity to hear about the exhibition before your visit!
